While I work on the second edition of Madness and Wonder, I’m also starting to work on a collaboration with a very talented artist Nick Collom. But before we start making a superhero web comic together (soon to be the Northern Lights Academy web comic featured here), he has agreed to do some Wonder art for me. The first bit is this gorgeous wonderland scene right out of the book to use as the website header. I’m so excited by it that I needed to put up the black and white before it’s even colored. (Here’s the black and white in case this post is being read after I get the colored version up.)

in≈ Comments Off on Technical difficulties and a reboot
So… This site had some serious technical difficulties recently and the last backup was both from February and didn’t back up a bunch of stuff, including the media files.
The meme stash page was hardest hit and it wasn’t worth re-posting the 62 memes from February 28th, 2016 to August 20, 2018. Some of the other pages and posts have been lost, but all that could be have been fixed. (and maybe even made better 😉 )
(If any one is interested in seeing the old quote memes, you can still find them on R.R. Surbier’s Facebook page.)
With the old memes all gone, I’ve decided to start fresh. It’s funny how things happen sometimes, because I’ve been talking with a very talented cartoonist about collaborating and he’s willing to make me some new background art for the quote memes (yay). so those should start showing up shortly.
One of the possible collaborations with this artist is a graphic novelization of Madness and Wonder, but that’s still a ways off (it’s still a super exciting thought for me, even if it will take some time).
A project a little more on the short list is adding a web comic to this site. It won’t be set in the Wonder universe, but it’s still pretty Faceted. It’s going to be a super hero themed world with some superheroes in training. Not my usual adult content, but still a lot of fun to plan & write so far.

in≈ Comments Off on Book under review… Squeeee!!!
Spent the last couple days formatting, line editing, & adding the extra pages (title page, copyright, dedication etc.). Now I wait for the rewiew process to be done & I can order my first proof book. There’s something about setting up the copyright & ISBN page that really made it all feel so real. I can’t wait to have my book out there for sale.

As promiced, the cover moc-up (Minus ISBN, price, and barcode). I’d love constructive feedback if you have suggestions.
Back text (in case you can’t read the tiny text in the jpg):
Rosie was a fey-born in a magic-starved world, able to see the magic spark in others, but unable to see the intentions of her abusive boyfriend. Hatter was a lonely fey-born world jumper, able to manipulate himself and the worlds around him, but lasting connections in unstable settings eluded him. When he heard Rosie’s psychic call, Hatter knew he had found a kindred spirit that he needed to help. Despite living in different worlds, and Rosie’s worries that her new guardian angel was all in her head, the soul mates are drawn together across dimensions to save each other; and through their love unintentionally fulfill a greater magical purpose. In Madness and Wonder, their gifts begin the return of magic to Rosie’s world that will take years, assuming they survive literally monstrous obstacles.
Madness and Wonder, like the rest of the upcoming Wonder series, is an erotic urban fantasy with horror elements and is intended for adults over the age of 18. Well, the mock up for my cover is now done. It seems I can only share the background graphic currently (but no text or logo, because I can only seem to share a jpg). If you want to see the whole book cover you might have to buy Madness and Wonder when I upload it to Amazon on the 11th (I can’t figure out how to share a PDF to this blog or facebook from an iPad at mumblty am… I should really get some sleep…)
The background art isn’t too different from what I posted this afternoon, but I’m hoping the hazy shapes in the darkness can be made out a little better now, and the glowing red eyes are menacingly closer (ok, I admit it, to fit on the front cover and not wrap to the spine).

26 Tuesday May 2015
I was thinking of Hatter (one of Madness and Wonder’s main characters) draped seductively across his red wingbacked chair for the cover, similar to the (not quite it) sketch I posted earlier. But, I am just too picky when it comes to Hatter and I don’t know if I will be satisfied with less than what I imagine.
Then another cover idea came to me & I’ve been playing with this for a couple hours :

The finished idea here is: Mostly black cover. Golden glowing protector attacking red glowing eyes (not in the art yet) in the darkness. Maybe a sneaky little shadowy monster tentacle hidden on the back cover too…
Haven’t decided yet, but I’m definitely leaning this way.

Yesterday I registered my copyright, today I created the logo for the spine of my books (and other places). The countdown to publication continued. 🙂

in≈ Comments Off on Publication Notice for Madness and Wonder
With my decision to self publish, I’ve also decided to set a release date for book one. I am currently planing to release Madness and Wonder on June 11, 2015 at Amazon. I should have a link available here for purchase by the 12th.
I’m really excited at the prospect of so many potential readers enjoying my characters and stories. Here’s hoping I do all the nuts and bolts right to expose the maximum number of my kind of readers to finding Madness and Wonder. And then when I’m one with book two, I’m hoping that the first draft will be done in about 6 months, for them to find Wonder in the Prime too.
So, for those of you wondering ‘why June 11th?’, there’s a simple but superstitious answer. It’s after Mercury is out of retrograde, (a bad time to start something new, & a time when tech often glitches) why take a chance right? It also gives me time to be sure I’m doing everything properly leagaly and a little more functionally. I also still need to come up with a cover, so that might push things past June 11, but I’m going to work as hard as possible to get that taken care of by my deadline too.

in≈ Comments Off on I hate this part
So after mumblty time spent sending more query letters to literary agents than I’d like to admit & getting back generic ‘we’re not looking for… right now’, I’m thinking about tabling the dream of having someone else doing my promoting & selling.
See, I’ve been the person trying to sell little nuggets of my soul before. Mumblty years ago I made beautiful handcrafted jewelry, & it taught me that I love expressing myself through artistic/creative things but HATE selling & promoting. So, now that I’m at the point of giving up on catching the right agent’s attention, I’m doing that thing that I didn’t want to do. I knew it would be the next step it getting my writing out there if I didn’t have success finding an agent, I just wish I didn’t have to. I’m starting to reasearch self publishing.
I know that lots of people have success with self publishing, but it’s a lot of work to do right and a lot of time that I’d rather spend writing. I was looking at a how to book on self publishing’s table of contence and seeing the section on the dreaded buisness plan just twisted my stomach in knots. All the legal stuff you have to do to sell your own stuff is torture to me, but sometimes you have to do what is awful to be able to do what you love, sooooo… I guess I’m going there. After I sell my first thousand books or so, I hear getting the attention of a good literary agent gets much easier (& then maybe I can just write what I enjoy).
Here’s hoping that in mumblty less time I’ll be looking back at this & thinking thank goodness I’m published and have lots of readers, Â now I can pass the socially painful stuff off to a competent person who enjoys doing the parts I hate. But for now… gotta do what feels like homework.
